One of my educational life goals is to at least TRY to keep up with current events, news, and stories about communities around the world. The past few years, nightly news programs have become so overwhelming with negative information.

So I’ve been looking for the good news out there instead. 🙏🏻

Build Up program allows recent grads to build their own homes (today.com)

Back in the “July 4, 2021” episode of the Sunday Today with Willie Geist, they ran a special story about an “experimental school” program in Ensley, (a large city neighborhood now annexed into Birmingham, Alabama), called Build Up.

The creator is a southern school teacher, Mark Martin, who has seen the poverty firsthand and has decided to create an real “hands on” learning opportunity for the high school students there.

This school is working out of an old Baptist church, teaching actual home building trades to students who would otherwise likely have no interest in the education system. These kids are growing up in an inner city area with high poverty rates.

Within the program, the students actually help completely rehab an old house in poor condition. After the house rehab, they are given the opportunity for their family to rent to own the home at a 0% interest rate!

I can’t think of a single network that’s readily available Monday through Friday that doesn’t focus on the murders, abuse, worldwide devastation stories, and even weather calamities.

So, the solution I’ve found for myself, is to hardly ever watch regular weeknight news programs. I’ve found two Sunday morning shows that are truly making the effort to bring in the good, positive, upbeat stories.

Today I’m thankful for finding ongoing education that shows there are still people out there working to make a positive difference in the world. These hands on, real stories help boost the hope that it’s really not as horrible out there as the local and national nightly news makes it seem.

There are still people out there doing good deeds. Thank God!

Live, Laugh, Love with everything you’ve got while you still can! 💜✨ Thank you so much for stopping by. I truly appreciate and value you all.
