As I’ve gotten back into my love of writing, there are so many themes that keep popping to the forefront of my thoughts. One of the biggest being my own childhood, and how it shaped most of my ways of thinking for the rest of my life.

Since my childhood was pretty dysfunctional at times, the mind shaping wasn’t all something I still want to hang on to. So continues my healing journey here, using my writing to acknowledge it, and to continue to work on it.

I found a new show, new to me, on Netflix this morning called Tales by Light. It follows photographers and filmmakers highlighting cultures, and daily lives of some of the poorest communities around the world. There seems to be a special focus on the children, which really resonated with me.

As a kid, I really didn’t realize my immediate family of three was poor. There were definite clues including: memories of standing in line for federal cheese, going to our local church for holiday grocery bags with meal supplies, looking through grocery store dumpsters with my mom for produce that was still in decent shape,….and how can I ever forget my personal joy at age five when my parents bought a new trailer! Funny how that was one of my favorite memories, kind of still is.

My memories of finding the trailer are the poetic ones: the long yellow sheers blowing in the wind from the open window, billowing almost; bouncing through the hall with a sense of pride that this was going to be ours, no more renting; and the huge kitchen sink, so shiny and new!

I really need to refocus on the true sense of joy in life. It’s not found in materials at all. No, my lifelong favorite memories are actions, like rolling down a hill in the summer, a bare foot walk in cool soft velvety grass, deciding exactly how to maneuver myself up a tree and the core decision of whether it was a true CLIMBING tree or not. 😊 And this was all before age 10.

Great memories, and not affected by money at all.

Much more to go over here, but in attempts to keep it short for today, I’ll pause here.
